After visiting these links and reading the articles I think that I got the idea what kind of project I want to make as a second part of personal development :)

yeh i remember reading this a while ago on cg society, seemed revolve rather heavily around zbrush which is always a great way of getting the organic feel that there after
Im not a huge fan of the movies, the first one was ok but the second 2 kind of ruined it for me. However, seeing the sheer ammount of work that went into making the characters look so realistic impressed me! Some of the squid like creatures look truley revolting, which is perfect for what they are!
I've not actually seen the movies beyond the first (which was fine and enjoyable) but having seen the links that you've posted here of the character's other than the captain I'm quite intrigued now. This is a demonstration of how easy it is to have great CGI in films these days which is almost proving once again that's it's a great imagination that's key as can be seen here.
I'm curious to know what your project ideas are now, and if you plan to CGI someones face to bits I volunteer!
